Verse 161 of Sura al-Baqara and Ghadir
Verse 161 of Sura al-Baqara is a verse that is mentioned in the al-Ghadir Sermon to describe the enemies of Ghadir, deeming them worthy of the curse of God, angels, and all people.
The context for the use of Al-Baqara Verse 161 in the Ghadir event is presented as follows: The Prophet (s) states in the al-Ghadir Sermon regarding the friends and enemies of the Ahl al-Bayt (a) in the Qurʾan: O people, our enemy is he whom God has condemned and cursed, and our friend is everyone whom God has praised and loved [notes 1].[1]
One of the instances the Prophet (s) refers to is the verse of cursing the disbelievers, which is found in Al-Baqara Verse 161:
- Indeed, those who disbelieved and died while they were disbelievers—upon them is the curse of Allah and the angels and all of mankind.
It has been said that those who disbelieved after the Prophet (s) after embracing Islam, those who trampled divine commands one after another, and those who replaced traditions with innovations were the people of Saqifa. It was the people of Saqifa who, through disbelief, led the people back to Jahiliyya, making themselves worthy of the curse of God, angels, and all people.[2]
