Regarding the occasion of revelation of Verse 204 of Sura al-Shu'ara, it is stated: In the incident of the protest of Harith b. Nu'man al-Fihri at Ghadir, and after a stone fell from the sky upon him, Verse 204 of Sura al-Shu'ara was revealed to rebuke the audacity of Harith and those like him: اَفَبِعَذابِنا یَسْتَعْجِلُونَ,Are they then impatient for Our torment?.[1]

After the declaration of the Wilaya of Amir al-Mu'minin at Ghadir, Harith b. Nu'man al-Fihri, out of intense denial and displeasure, accused the Prophet (s) of appointing a position for his relatives on his own accord. The Prophet (s) replied that this position was bestowed upon 'Ali (a) by God. At this moment, Harith raised his head towards the sky and said: "O God, if Muhammad is truthful in what he says, then rain a stone upon us from the sky or send down a torment upon us that would be a retribution for the first of us (deniers of Wilaya) and a sign for our future generations; and if what Muhammad says is false, then send down a torment upon him."

As soon as Harith moved away from the Prophet (s), two divine punishments descended upon him simultaneously, while the Prophet (s) and his companions watched him from afar. After this event, Verse 204 of Sura al-A'raf was revealed to rebuke him for seeking punishment.[2]
