Verse 22 of Sura Al-Mujadila has been cited in the Ghadir Sermon. Some researchers have outlined the context for the use of this verse as follows: In the seventh part of the Ghadir Sermon, after the straight path was clarified, the speech of the Prophet (s) continued with the introduction of friends and enemies of the Ahl al-Bayt (a). He (s) made eleven statements in this regard, six of which described their friends and five described their enemies. In this part of the Ghadir Sermon, the Prophet (s) directly recited Verse 22 of Sura Al-Mujadila in their description, the concept of which was that love for God cannot be combined with love for God's enemies.

With this verse, the Prophet (s) made the condition of disavowal from enemies for accepting Imamate and, in return, bestowed a greater reward and sign upon the friends of the Ahl al-Bayt (a):

You will not find a people who believe in Allah and the Last Day loving those who oppose Allah and His Messenger, even if they were their fathers or their sons or their brothers or their kindred. Those are the ones in whose hearts He has inscribed faith and strengthened them with a spirit from Him. And He will admit them to gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding eternally therein. Allah is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him. Those are the party of Allah. Unquestionably, the party of Allah – they are the successful.[1]
