The context of the revelation of Verse Sixty-four of Surah Tawba has been described by some researchers as follows: Following the plot to assassinate the Prophet (s) by the hypocrites at Harshi Pass and its neutralization, four verses of the Qur'an were revealed concerning their action; verses that identified their identity and objectives. Among these verses was Verse Sixty-four of Surah Tawba:

یَحْذَرُ الْمُنافِقُونَ اَنْ تُنَزَّلَ عَلَیْهِمْ سُورَةَ تُنَبِّئَهُمْ بِما فِی قُلُوبِهِمْ قُلِ اسْتَهْزِؤُوا اِنَّ اللَّهَ مُخْرِجٌ ما کُنْتُمْ تَحْذَرُونَ

The hypocrites are afraid that a sura might be sent down concerning them, informing them about what is in their hearts. Say, 'Go on mocking! Allah will expose what you are afraid of.'
