TopicCooperation and how Banu Umayya cooperated with the Companions of the Sahifa

Verses 24 and 25 of Sura Muhammad are verses about the Companions of the First Cursed Sahifa which revealed the cooperation of Banu Umayya with the Companions of the Sahifa.

The context of the revelation of verses 24 and 25 of Sura Muhammad is described as follows:[1] On the fourteenth of Dhu l-Hijja during the Farewell Pilgrimage, complex events occurred; among them, the Companions of the First Cursed Sahifa - who had written a covenant against the Ahl al-Bayt (a) and signed it in the Ka'ba - acted to usurp the caliphate. The first people they thought could cooperate well in usurping the caliphate were Banu Umayya. So, they invited their leaders to their assembly. At this stage, they added an economic issue to their concerns, which was the prevention of *khums* from the Ahl al-Bayt (a). They thought that if the *khums* was in their possession, they would use it to usurp the caliphate.

In that assembly, 'Uthman b. 'Affan and Mu'awiya b. Abi Sufyan participated as the leaders of Banu Umayya, and several others were also present, namely: 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Awf, 'Amr b. al-'As, Sa'd b. Abi Waqqas (Abu Ishaq), Mughira b. Shu'ba, Abu Hurayra, and Abu Musa al-Ash'ari. Banu Umayya asked them: Whom have you considered for the caliphate? They said: Abu Bakr! They said: We agree with preventing *khums*, but not with Abu Bakr's caliphate. They accepted this much from Banu Umayya and allied with them, and once again made Abu 'Ubayda al-Jarrah their witness, expanding their group to implement their plans. It was here that Allah informed His Prophet (s) about the conclusion of the second covenant and revealed verses 79 and 80 of Sura al-Zukhruf.

Following that, verses 24 and 25 of Sura Muhammad (s) were revealed, which reported Banu Umayya's acceptance of half of the proposal of the Companions of the Sahifa: Indeed, those who turned back on their heels after guidance had become clear to them - Satan enticed them and prolonged hope for them. That is because they said to those who disliked what Allah had revealed, "We will obey you in part of the matter." And Allah knows their secrets.[2]
