Verses 93 and 94 of Sura al-Mu'minun and Ghadir
Verses 93 and 94 of Sura Al-Mu'minun are verses revealed during Hajjat al-Wada' to show examples of divine punishment on enemies in Ghadir.
The historical context of the revelation of verses 93 and 94 of Sura Al-Mu'minun is depicted as follows: during the journey of Hajjat al-Wada', the caravan of Ghadir was preparing to announce the Wilaya in Mina; before moving in Masjid al-Khayf, the revelation of seven verses of the Quran, after a short speech about the status of 'Ali b. Abi Talib (a), was a serious warning from God for people to understand the greatness of Ghadir; verses, each of which supported one of the Thaqalayn.
Historical Context of Revelation
The historical context of the revelation of verses 93 and 94 of Sura Al-Mu'minun is depicted as follows: during the journey of Hajjat al-Wada', the caravan of Ghadir was preparing to announce the Wilaya in Mina; before moving in Masjid al-Khayf, the revelation of seven verses of the Quran, after a short speech about the status of 'Ali b. Abi Talib (a), was a serious warning from God for people to understand the greatness of Ghadir; verses, each of which supported one of the Thaqalayn.[1]
Of these seven verses, two were verses 93 and 94 of Sura Al-Mu'minun: 
قُلْ رَبِّ إِمَّا تُرِیَنِّی مَا یُوعَدُونَ ﴿۹۳﴾ رَبِّ فَلَا تَجْعَلْنِی فِی الْقَوْمِ الظَّالِمِینَ ﴿۹۴﴾,Say, "My Lord, if You should show me that which they are promised [of punishment], My Lord, then do not place me among the wrongdoing people."
The rest of those seven verses were verses 41 to 44 of Sura Al-Zukhruf and verse 61 of Sura Al-Zukhruf.
Doctrinal Analysis of the Verses
The revelation of verses 93 and 94 of Sura Al-Mu'minun, according to some researchers, contains certain doctrinal data; including showing examples of divine punishment on enemies in Ghadir, the prime example of which was the story of Harith al-Fihri in denying the status of Wilaya and the descent of a heavenly stone upon his head, by which God showed His power in Ghadir in the presence of His Prophet. This matter was predicted by the revelation of verses 93 and 94 of Sura Al-Mu'minun and verse 42 of Al-Zukhruf.[2]
Jabir b. 'Abd Allah al-Ansari described this preliminary period of Ghadir as follows: The Prophet (s) in Mina, while I was closer to him than anyone else, said: "Beware, lest I find you after me having apostatized and become disbelievers, striking each other's necks. By God, if you do so, you will find me in the army that has come to fight you." Then the Prophet looked behind him and said three times: "Or 'Ali will come to fight you," and we thought that Jibra'il told him this from behind the Prophet. After this incident, God revealed: "And if We take you away from this world, We will surely take revenge on them" through 'Ali b. Abi Talib, "or We will show you what We have promised them, for We have power and dominion over them."
Then these verses were revealed: "Say, 'My Lord, if You should show me that which they are promised [of punishment], do not place me among the wrongdoing people.'" Following this, it was revealed: "Hold fast to that which has been revealed to you – concerning 'Ali – for you are on a straight path"; and this verse was revealed that 'Ali is a sign of the Day of Judgment, and it was also revealed: "And indeed, it is a reminder for you and your people, and you will soon be questioned – concerning 'Ali."[3]
