- Al-Ghadir fi al-Kitab wa al-Sunna wa al-Adab*, better known as *Al-Ghadir*, written by 'Abd al-Husayn Amini, is a book written in Arabic arguing for the immediate caliphate of the Commander of the Faithful (a), relying on the Event of Ghadir and the negation of the guardianship (Wilayah) of non-infallibles over the Islamic society. This book is considered Amini's most comprehensive and important work, and the result of his extensive efforts in finding sources and collecting and compiling their contents around Hadith al-Ghadir.
broadly speaking, the entire content of *Al-Ghadir* can be summarized under main temes: proving the absolute guardianship (Wilayah) of the infallible Imams (a) by establishing the immediate caliphate of the Commander of the Faithful (a); and rejecting the guardianship of non-infallibles individuals in Islam and examining its negative effects on Islamic society.
Amini stated that his purpose in writing *Al-Ghadir* was to serve the religion, bring the truth to light, revive the memory of Ghadir as the greatest and the most significant event in the history of Islam, lay the foundation for a new and vibrant life for Muslim nations, and expressing his sincere devotion and reverence toward the Commander of the Faithful (a) through this work.

In addition to its numerous edition, this book has been translated into various languages, and summaries of it have been presented in Arabic and other languages. Furthermore, indexes, supplements, and adaptations of the book have also been published.
Status and Significance
The book *Al-Ghadir fi l-Kitab wa l-Sunna wa l-Adab* (book), commonly known as *Al-Ghadir* (book), written by Abd al-Husayn Amini, is considered an Arabic-language book on proving the immediate caliphate of the Commander of the Faithful (a) by relying on the Event of Ghadir Khumm and refuting the guardianship of non-infallibles over the Islamic community.[1]
- Al-Ghadir* (book), written by Amini, is regarded as his most comprehensive and significant work, and the result of his immense efforts in locating sources and gathering and organizing material surrounding the Hadith al-Ghadir.[2] It has been stated that although Amini was not the first to write about Ghadir and its hadith, his work is richer than other works in this field, with a more refined approach, greater depth, and a broader scope.[3]
According to some researchers, *Al-Ghadir* (book) is an unparalleled work: since the early centuries of Islamic , no other work defending Shi'ism and the legitimacy of the Commander of the Faithful (a) has reached the level of *Al-Ghadir* (book) in terms of the content and arguments, innovation, comprehensiveness, diversity of topics, and the breadth of its content.[4]
It has been said that the full title of *Al-Ghadir* (book) signifies that anyone who denies the Hadith al-Ghadir and the material related to it is, in fact, denying the Quran, the Sunna, and the literature and history of the Arabs, as this book contains well-established facts regarding this hadith based on the Quran, the Sunna, and literature.[5]
According to the son of Allama Amini, the writing of *Al-Ghadir* (book) took half a century of Allama Amini's life.[6] Allama Amini is reported to have stated that, in writing *Al-Ghadir* (book), he read ten thousand books from cover to cover and repeatedly consulted one hundred thousand books.[7] Abd al-Husayn Amini recalled instances of the favors and assistance of the Commander of the Faithful (a) during the writing process of *Al-Ghadir* (book) that helped overcome obstacles in completing the work.[8]

Muhammad Hamid al-Din, Zaydi Imam of Yemen, King Abdullah I bin al-Hussein, King of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, and King Farouk I, King of Egypt.[12] According to Muhammad Rida Hakimi, a Shi'a researcher, Amini published the endorsements of Islamic rulers at the beginning of Al-Ghadir (book) for reasons of expediency in connection with the publication of the book.[13].[13]
Motivation and purpose of Writing
'Abd al-Husayn Amini stated that his goal in writing *Al-Ghadir* was to serve the religion, elevate the truth, revive the memory of Ghadir as the greatest and most significant event in the history of Islam, create the foundation for a new and vibrant life for Muslim nations, and express his sincerity and devotion to the sacred presence of Imam 'Ali (a).[14]
'Abd al-Husayn Amini, the author of Al-Ghadir (book), is quoted as stating that before writing Al-Ghadir (book), he had considered researching several peerless figures; however, he ultimately concluded that the only person worthy of whatever might be written about him was the Commander of the Faithful (a).[15] In his view, the Commander of the Faithful (a) was a figure who, despite his eminence and uniqueness, was wronged. For this reason, he chose the virtues and excellences of the Commander of the Faithful (a) as the subject of his work.[16]
Amini is quoted as stating that he was uncertain about the subject of his work on the personality of Imam 'Ali (a).[17] He reflected on the matter for a long time without reaching a conclusion until one day he went to the shrine of Imam 'Ali (a) and sought his intercession. He considered all topics and discussions and found them to be limited, until the idea of writing Al-Ghadir (book) came to his mind.[18]
Characteristics
Some researchers have identified several characteristics of Al-Ghadir, including:
- The arguments and discussions are arranged using a polemical approach (refuting the opposing side through its own beliefs) and rely on Sunni sources.[19]
- In this book, the arguments of the opponents of the Imamate are presented and criticized fairly and courageously..[20]
- All the material presented in the book is supported by documentation.[21]
- The prose of the book is beautiful, flowing, and eloquent, which has led some Arab literary figures to praise the book.[22]
- Quranic verses are cited at the end of discussions or within them..[23]
- Fundamental issues are discussed extensively in various fields, including hadith, history, theology, ethics, jurisprudence, and rijal.[24]
- In writing the book, all works of tafsir, hadith, history, rijal, genealogy, lexicography, and poetry were studied carefully. For this reason, the author wrote at the beginning of the book: "Al-Ghadir fi al-Kitab wa al-Sunna wa al-Adab: A religious, scholarly, technical, historical, literary, and ethical book." This breadth of sources is one of the reasons for the enduring legacy of Al-Ghadir.[25]
- According to Morteza Motahhari, a Shi'a scholar, Al-Ghadir, contrary to some assumptions about its negative impact on the unity of Islamic schools of thought, paves the way for Islamic unity in three areas: first, it demonstrates that Shi'ism was not the product of political or ethnic currents, but is based on a strong logic and relies on the Quran and Sunnah; second, it exposes the falsehood of some accusations made against the Shi'a that have caused Islamic schools of thought to distance themselves from Shi'ism; third, it introduces Imam 'Ali (a)—the great Islamic figure who is the most oppressed and whose true status has been least recognized—as well as his purified descendants, to the Islamic world as role models.[26]
- According to Rasul Ja'fariyan, a researcher of Shi'a history, Al-Ghadir, regardless of the fact that its main subject is Ghadir and the Imamate, is regarded as a work on Shi'a history, because the book contains a vast amount of information about the history of Shi'ism. Much of this information was not available at the time of writing Al-Ghadir, and Amini, through his remarkable research efforts to complete the book, made it possible for a great deal of information related to the history of Shi'ism to be presented throughout its pages..[27]
