Book Content
Boulos Salameh was a Lebanese Christian poet, litterateur, and judge known for his epic poetry. Within a short period, he composed the long poems ʿAlī wa-l-Ḥusayn in 1946 CE, al-Amīr al-Bashīr in 1947 CE, and Filasṭīn wa-Akhawātuhā in 1948 CE. Some time later, he composed the epics ʿĪd al-Ghadīr and, subsequently, ʿĪd al-Riyāḍ in 1955 CE.
In the two epics, *ʿĪd al-Riyāḍ* and *ʿĪd al-Ghadīr*, Salameh made history their central theme. In ʿĪd al-Riyāḍ, he praised King ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz Āl Saʿūd, known as “Asad al-Jazīra” (Lion of the Peninsula), and spoke of his courage and valor. He stated explicitly that he had composed the other epic, *ʿĪd al-Ghadīr*—in which he described the most important events and occurrences in Islamic history from the pre-Islamic era to the end of the tragic events of Karbala—at the suggestion of ʿAllāma Sayyid ʿAbd al-Ḥusayn Sharaf al-Dīn.
