Verse 11 of Sura Al-Mutaffifin is among the verses mentioned in supplications related to Ghadir and has been interpreted as the denial of the Imam 'Ali's (a) Wilaya meaning the denial of the Day of Judgment or the denial of religion.

According to some researchers, verse eleven of Sura Al-Mutaffifin is included in a part of the supplication recited after the Ghadir Day prayer. In this verse, denial is attributed to Yawm al-Dīn. The meaning of "Dīn" in these contexts has been understood as the Wilaya of Amir al-Muʾminin (a), which is explicitly stated in numerous narrations. As a conclusion drawn from this verse by some researchers, it has been stated: the denial of the Wilaya of Amir al-Muʾminin (a) either means the denial of the Day of Judgment, which is referred to as Yawm al-Dīn, or the denial of "Dīn" which is interpreted as the complete divine religion.


A Verse in the Text of a Ghadiri Supplication

According to some researchers, verse eleven of Sura Al-Mutaffifin is a verse that appears in the text of one of the supplications related to Ghadir. One of the Quranic manifestations of Ghadir is the supplications and Ziyarahs that explain and interpret the verses related to the Event of Ghadir. In many supplications and Ziyarahs—especially those related to the night and day of Ghadir—unspoken aspects of the Ghadir issue are found that are not present in any other narration. In some cases, the occasion of revelation of verses, in others, citing Quranic verses, and in still others, considering Ghadir as the instance for the mentioned verse, have been discussed.[1] Among these is verse eleven of Sura Al-Mutaffifin:

AL-LADHĪNA YUKADHDHIBŪNA BI-YAWMI AL-DĪN (11),[Woe on that Day to the deniers] who deny the Day of Judgment.


Verse in the Text of the Supplication

According to some researchers, verse eleven of Sura Al-Mutaffifin is included in a part of the supplication recited after the Ghadir Day prayer:

فَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ عَلى ما مَنَنْتَ بِهِ عَلَيْنا مِنَ الاخْلاصِ لَكَ بِوَحْدانِيَّتِكَ، وَ جُدْتَ عَلَيْنا بِمُوالاةِ وَلِيِّكَ الْهادى مِنْ بَعْدِ نَبِيِّكَ النَّذيرِ الْمُنْذِرِ، وَ رَضيتَ لَنَا الاسْلامَ ديناً بِمَوْلانا، وَ اتْمَمْتَ عَلَيْنا نِعْمَتَكَ بِالَّذى جَدَّدْتَ لَنا عَهْدَكَ وَ ميثاقَكَ، وَ ذَكَّرْتَنا ذلِكَ وَ جَعَلْتَنا مِنْ اهْلِ الاخْلاصِ وَ التَّصْديقِ لِعَهْدِكَ وَ ميثاقِكَ وَ مِنْ اهْلِ الْوَفاءِ بِذلِكَ، وَ لَمْ تَجْعَلْنا مِنَ النّاكِثينَ وَ الْمُكَذِّبينَ الَّذينَ يُكَذِّبُونَ، الْجاحِدينَ بِيَوْمِ الدّينِ، وَ لَمْ تَجْعَلْنا مِنَ الْمُغَيِّرينَ وَ الْمُبَدِّلينَ وَ الْمُحَرِّفينَ وَ الْمُبَتِّكينَ آذانَ الانْعامَ، وَ الْمُغَيِّرينَ خَلْقَ اللَّهِ، وَ مِنَ الَّذينَ اسْتَحْوَذَ عَلَيْهِمُ الشَّيْطانُ فَأَنْساهُمْ ذِكْرَ اللَّهِ، وَ صَدَّهُمْ عَنِ السّبيلِ وَ الصِّراطِ الْمُسْتَقيمِ ….[2]


Interpretation of "Dīn" in the Verse by Narrations

In verse eleven of Sura Al-Mutaffifin, denial is attributed to Yawm al-Dīn. The meaning of "Dīn" in these contexts has been understood as the Wilaya of Amir al-Muʾminin (a), which is explicitly stated in numerous narrations. As a conclusion drawn from this verse by some researchers, it has been stated: the denial of the Wilaya of Amir al-Muʾminin (a) either means the denial of the Day of Judgment, which is referred to as Yawm al-Dīn, or the denial of "Dīn" which is interpreted as the complete divine religion.[3]

In narrative texts, Hadiths are mentioned regarding the interpretation of this verse; including:

  • Imam al-Sadiq (a): "Dīn is the Wilaya of 'Ali b. Abi Talib."[4]
  • Imam al-Kazim (a) also mentioned the preceding verses and said: LAQAD KHALAQNA AL-INSĀNA FĪ AḤSANI TAQWĪM, THUMMA RADADNĀHU ASFALA SĀFILĪN,[5] this human being who was created in the best form, descends to the lowest of the low due to hatred for Amir al-Muʾminin (a). Then they ask him: FA-MĀ YUKADHDHIBUKA BAʿDU BI-AL-DĪN[6] "What then makes you deny the religion?" The meaning of Dīn is the Wilaya of 'Ali b. Abi Talib (a).[7]
  • Imam al-Rida (a), in explaining the verse A RAʾAYTA AL-LADHĪ YUKADHDHIBU BI-AL-DĪN, said: it refers to someone who does not accept the Wilaya of 'Ali b. Abi Talib (a) and denies it.[8]
