Verse 144 of Al 'Imran and Ghadir
Verse 144 of Sūrat Āl ʿImrān is a verse that was used in the al-Ghadir Sermon to recommend Muslims to consider divine pleasure, because if all the people on earth become disbelievers, it will not harm God.
Some researchers have outlined the context for the use of Verse 144 of Sūrat Āl ʿImrān in the Ghadir event as follows: The last section of the al-Ghadir Sermon was dedicated to enumerating the virtues of ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib (a), in which the Prophet (s) stated the highest virtue for the Imam in one sentence, linking it to the Qur'ān. On the one hand, he mentioned the revelation of ʿAlī's (a) virtues in the Qurʾān, and on the other hand, he considered the sea of his excellences to be beyond what could be mentioned in a single gathering.
Then, considering the vastness of ʿAlī's (a) virtues, he commanded us to accept them from the people of knowledge, and then referred to Verse 71 of Sūrat al-Aḥzāb and Verses 20 and 21 of Sūrat al-Tawba. In a part of the eleventh and final section of the al-Ghadir Sermon, the Prophet, by referring to a Qurʾānic verse, reminded the people to consider divine pleasure, because if all the people on earth become disbelievers, it will not harm God. In this regard, he referred to two verses: Verse 8 of Sūrat Ibrāhīm and a part of Verse 144 of Sūrat Āl ʿImrān:
- And whoever turns back on his heels will not harm Allah in the least.
O people, say that which God is pleased with from your words, for if you and all those on earth disbelieve, it will not harm God in the least.[notes 1][1]
