The context for the use of Verse 27 of Sura al-Baqarah in the event of Ghadir is depicted as follows: The Prophet (s) states in the al-Ghadir Sermon regarding the friends and enemies of the Ahl al-Bayt (a) in the Qur'an: O people, our enemy is whoever God has condemned and cursed, and our ally is everyone whom God has praised and loved.[notes 1][1]

One of the instances the Prophet (s) referred to in this part of the sermon is Verse 27 of Sura al-Baqarah:

الَّذِینَ یَنْقُضُونَ عَهْدَ اللَّهِ مِنْ بَعْدِ مِیثَاقِهِ وَیَقْطَعُونَ مَا أَمَرَ اللَّهُ بِهِ أَنْ یُوصَلَ وَیُفْسِدُونَ فِی الْأَرْضِ ۚ أُولٰئِکَ هُمُ الْخَاسِرُونَ
Those who break the covenant of Allah after having pledged it, and sever what Allah has commanded to be joined, and cause corruption on the earth—it is they who are the losers.

Who broke the divine covenant of Ghadir? Who severed their connection and that of the Islamic community with the Prophet's (s) household, even though he had commanded connection with them? It was the people of Saqifa whose corruption on earth has continued and will continue until today and until the Day of Judgment. In this verse, they are called losers; because, based on Verse 25 of Sura al-Ra'd, Allah's curse is inscribed upon their foreheads in the Qur'an, and they will have a bad end in the abode of the Hereafter.[2]
