Verse 86 of Sura Al-i 'Imran is a verse in the al-Ghadir Sermon with which the enemies of Ghadir are counted as disbelievers who disbelieved after their faith and were placed among the unjust.
The context of using Verse 86 of Sura Al-i 'Imran in the Ghadir event is described as follows: The Prophet (s) stated in the al-Ghadir Sermon regarding the friends and enemies of the Ahl al-Bayt (a) in the Qur'an: O people, our enemy is he whom God has condemned and cursed, and our friend is everyone whom God has praised and loved[notes 1].[1]
One of the instances the Prophet (s) referred to in the al-Ghadir Sermon is Verse 86 of Sura Al-i 'Imran: How shall Allah guide a people who disbelieved after their belief, and bore witness that the Apostle is true, and clear proofs had come to them? And Allah does not guide the wrongdoing lot.[notes 2]
Who were those who disbelieved after the Prophet (s), after they had been Muslims? Who trampled upon divine commands one after another? Who replaced innovations with traditions? They were the people of Saqifa who, with absolute disbelief, returned the people to Jahiliyya and, based on Verse 87 of Sura Al-i 'Imran, made themselves deserving of the curse of God, angels, and all people.[2]
